Choosing Art & Wall Decor

Art makes a house feel like a home. I haven’t invested in any pricey pieces yet while I’ve been living in apartments, but I have found a number of great prints and artwork that I really like for my space.

It’s always exciting when you find art thats pretty, or works with your colors and theme. It’s even better when you find pieces that mean something to you! Everything in my apartment for the most part carries some sort of sentimental value. A favorite place of mine, or a special memory for Ryan and I.

I have taken time to find every piece for our walls rather than just filling them immediately, and I’ve continued to update and make changes. It’s been a process but I love all the updates so far!

Portugal Print

I found this photo print on Minted, of a fountain in Sintra outside of Lisbon that I visited last summer. I wanted to incorporate a photo or painting of Portugal somehow but didn’t want it to feel too beachy, given that we’re living in NYC. I also wanted to make it a calming color that wouldn’t clash with the rest of the room. I found this and loved the lighting and tile details.

Summer Beach Print

I love the beach, and was looking for a way to incorporate some reminder of it without making it feel too beachy. I liked the colors of this one and though it registers as beach to me, its not too obvious either. Just very calming!

This aerial drone shot reminds me of a Grey Malin but it was a fraction of the price!

Float Print: I’ve had this in my room for years but decided it fits best in my bathroom. It makes me feel instantly relaxed.

Special Coordinates Print: These coordinates are for the college town where Ryan and I first met. I bought him this as a gift when we moved in, for our first apartment together. But I also liked this nod to UD and to some of the greatest years we spent at school there.

Waves Print Set: I loved this calming series and the blue hues that worked well with the rest of our bedroom.

Country Song Lyrics - Typography Print

Ry and I love Eric Church, we’ve seen him perform live several times with our friends and gone to many country concerts over the years. I wanted to incorporate some art that reminded us of all those good memories. There were several favorite song lyrics I was choosing between, but I loved this one because it reminds me of Ryan.

Pineapple Watercolor Print: I also had this for a few years but love it above our kitchen table. It’s not the traditional “bowl of fruit” painting you see in a kitchen but it’s a sort of light and cute association.

Here’s a Money Saving Trick!

If you’re decorating on a budget like I often am, you can add color to your walls without buying an expensive piece of artwork, painting or photograph, or print. If I was creative enough, I’d make something myself! Unfortunately, I lack that kind of talent.

Instead, head to a store like Paper Source that sells wrapping paper, boxes and gift bags and select some of your favorite designs. You can frame anything! Just be sure to size the paper accordingly to your frame, and if you want it to look even more elevated get a frame with matte paper.

The leafy print below is an example of a successful Paper Source craft project, as was pretty much everything else pictured and not tagged on my gallery wall. It saved me a lot of money, but I really love the brightness it brought to my otherwise boring white walls.
